Fundraising
A major fundraising effort is underway to restore the 1928 Byrd Theatre to its former grandeur. The National Historic Landmark has remained largely unaltered since it opened and major renovations are needed to preserve one of the Nation’s finest cinema treasures.
The Byrd Theatre Foundation estimates that it will take about $5 million to restore the theatre and to provide enhancements to add to its comfort. Many of the restoration needs are invisible while others are painfully visible. Below is a list of needs and renovations planned for the theatre as funds become available:
- -Secure an architectural firm specializing in historic renovation
- -Replace auditorium seating
- -Replace carpeting
- -Restore historical marquee
- -Immediate organ repairs
- -Major historical renovation of organ
- -Expansion of stage area
- -Restroom renovation
- -Update electrical wiring
- -Update heating system
- -Repair ornate plaster
- -Replace rear theatre doors
- -Update handicapped accessibility
- -Upgrade security system
